Fantasy Baseball: Will Jay Bruce Have Better Numbers In Cleveland?
It is a bit unusual to have someone of this caliber moving after the trade deadline, but the Mets were able to move Jay Bruce to Cleveland. Here is the deal:
Bruce will occupy a key slot in the middle of the order for Cleveland. This move comes the day after Michael Brantley landed on the disabled list for the second time this season.
Bruce hit .256 with 29 homers and 75 RBI in 103 games for the Mets this season. His next homer will put him over 30 for fifth time in his career. Homers may not be as easy to come by in Progressive Field, but it isn’t like it is a great pitcher’s park either. And in case you haven’t noticed, most of Bruce’s shots aren’t on the cheap.

The loser in the short term is Brandon Guyer. Guyer was about to fall into quite a bit of playing time with Brantley spraining his ankle on Tuesday night. The Indians outfield will be Austin Jackson, Bradley Zimmer and Bruce for the near future.
Once Brantley returns, Austin Jackson will be the one displaced. Bruce’s career really took off when he figured out how to hit lefties. That is likely a main reason that Cleveland targeted Bruce specifically. Their main competition in the A.L. has a couple of guys named Chris Sale and David Price leading the way.
Bruce’s power numbers likely wont see a jump in Cleveland, and there may even be a little regression. However, that will be offset by the increased RBI opportunities and runs scored. Bruce is worth adding if he is available in any league, but considering he is 92.5% owned, you will likely have to chase him in a trade. If you need help in RBI, that is not a bad idea. Just don’t overpay since his overall numbers are not likely to see a huge increase.
Ryder Ryan wont make an impact for the Mets anytime soon, but by the time he is ready for the major leagues, he could have a clear path to the closer role. Ryan is 3-4 with 4.79 ERA in 33 appearances with six saves in ten tries. The silver lining is that Ryan has 49 strikeouts in 41.1 innings pitched.
