With just weeks left of the season, it’s crunch time. Padres pitcher Dinelson Lamet is going unnoticed and is putting up decent numbers.

The San Diego Padres aren’t home to many fantasy stars. Wil Myers and…yeah, I got nothing. However, there are a couple of players that have their moments and provide you with a good week or two. One of them has been starting pitcher Dinelson Lamet.

The rookie pitcher isn’t having an amazing season but has improved over his last five starts. Lamet has a 4.78 ERA, 1.142 WHIP and 7-4 record. Among starting pitchers currently on the Padres, he has the second-best ERA and best WHIP.

Over his last five starts, Lamet has a 4-0 record with a 2.37 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 30:10 K:BB ratio. He did have the luck of facing some poor offenses like the San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates in that span but a good pitcher should take advantage of those matchups.

Fantasy owners are adding Lamet based on recent success. He’s been added in 12.7 percent of ESPN leagues over the last week.

While his next matchup isn’t as favorable, Washington Nationals on August 20, he is still worth adding to your roster for depth.

His strikeout and walk rates are actually pretty good for the season, 11.0 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9. Lamet is getting a first pitch strike on almost 55 percent of his at-bats. He does have a high fly ball rate, 45.5 percent, but the 35.8 hard hit rate is keeping most of those batted balls inside the park.

PetCo Park does rank in the bottom third in runs, RBI and home runs this season. With Bryce Harper out of the Nationals lineup, Lamet could get another quality start.

With very few reliable starting pitchers on the waiver wire, Lamet has put up a track record good enough to be a long-term add. That is especially true because, if you do add him, I’d wait until after the Sunday start to put him in your lineup.

Lamet doesn’t pitch deep into games, 5.4 innings per start. With a solid bullpen behind him and still a young pitcher, he may not be allowed to pitch deep into games. However, when he pitches, he doesn’t allow many runs. He has four starts with five or more runs allowed.

He should be a big pickup for the rest of the week leading up to his next start.
