Verizon IndyCar Series standings after ABC Supply 500
Josef Newgarden is still the Verizon IndyCar Series points leader after the ABC Supply 500 but by how much? Here are the updated standings after Pocono.
Josef Newgarden’s runner-up finish at the ABC Supply 500 was enough to keep him holding onto the Verizon IndyCar Series championship lead but Scott Dixon is back breathing down his neck for that top spot after Sunday’s race at Pocono.
Newgarden increased his lead to 18 points coming out of the ABC Supply 500, thanks to a late charge that saw him climb from the Top 10 to second place. But Dixon finished sixth, which kept the No. 2 Team Penske driver from getting too far ahead and also bounced Helio Castroneves from second to third in the IndyCar points standings.
Castroneves, who crashed in Pocono qualifying, had a tough day at the ABC Supply 500 and paid for it in the points though he’s just four markers back of Dixon.
Fellow Penske drivers Simon Pagenaud and Will Power round out the top five, keeping the Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing grip on the top of the IndyCar championship ranks. Graham Rahal is the only other driver with more than 400 points in the 2017 IndyCar season, as Josef Newgarden will pass 500 points next weekend at Gateway.
However, he has not ever raced in St. Louis while Scott Dixon and Castroneves have, with the latter winning the final Gateway race in 2003. So the IndyCar points standings are far from stable following the ABC Supply 500.
Below are the updated Verizon IndyCar Series standings after the ABC Supply 500:
1 – Josef Newgarden – 494 pts
