Floyd Mayweather will bring a wealth of experience into his upcoming fight against Conor McGregor, and that experience comes from spending his entire life in a boxing ring

Since Floyd Mayweather agreed to face UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in a multi-million dollar boxing match, we’ve basically been given an inside look at the lives of both fighters on a daily basis. But after spending a lifetime in the ring, the man known as “Money” is no stranger to the spotlight.

Although he now spends much of his time in Las Vegas, Mayweather is originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan where he first fell in love with the sport while watching his father and uncles compete in the ring. His father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., and uncles Roger and Jeff Mayweather, all fought professionally and enjoyed relatively successful boxing careers.

Initially, Mayweather learned the family business under the watchful eye of his father, but Roger became his trainer when Floyd Sr. was sent to prison for drug trafficking in 1993. At that point, Roger began to teach the young prodigy the elite defensive skills that made him so successful as a pro, leading Floyd to his biggest opportunity as an amateur at the 1996 Olympics where he earned a bronze medal.

Beginning with his TKO-victory over Roberto Apodaca in his pro debut, it was obvious that Mayweather was born to be a boxer. Throughout his career, Mayweather won a total of 25 World Championship fights and was a five-division world champion while competing in weight classes ranging from 130-154 pounds. But perhaps most impressively, Mayweather’s defensive skills led opponents to connect on an average of just 16 percent of their punches.

Other than his many accomplishments in the ring, Mayweather has a reputation for making millions. In 2015, Mayweather made an estimated $240 million from his highly anticipated showdown with Manny Pacquiao and another $32 million from his fight with Andre Berto. In fact, Mayweather hasn’t made less than $30 million from a single fight since 2009 by continuing to dominate and defeat some of the biggest names in boxing.

While he’s beaten every relevant boxer within reach during a career that doesn’t include a single loss, Mayweather may be remembered most for his 2015 fight against Pacquiao. Despite the pre-fight hype, that bout will go down as one of the biggest busts in boxing history, and considering the circumstances, the fact that Mayweather walked away with a win isn’t likely to help his legacy.

Most recently, Mayweather defeated Berto by unanimous decision in September 2015 before once again announcing his retirement. But at 49-0, and just one win shy of tying Rocky Marciano’s all-time mark of 50-0, Mayweather couldn’t pass on the chance to make millions for fighting an opponent like McGregor.

Now 40 years old, Mayweather won’t be able to fight off Father Time forever, and if this is the last time we see him step into the ring, a multi-million dollar boxing extravaganza against the most popular name in sports and the UFC’s reigning ruler will be a great way to say goodbye.
