Was Paulie Malignaggi a spy for Floyd Mayweather? Coach Angelo Reyes says it wouldn’t matter
Was Paulie Malignaggi spying on the Conor McGregor training camp to bring intel back to Floyd Mayweather ahead of the “Fight of the Century”? Boxing and MMA coach Angelo Reyes says even if he was, it wouldn’t matter.
Angelo Reyes, who is friends with Paulie Malignaggi, has been spending time with the retired boxer all week long in Las Vegas ahead of the big fight this weekend. Malignaggi was famously brought in by McGregor’s camp to spar so the UFC Lightweight Champion could get a feel for what it’s like to be in the ring with a former boxing champion.
Mayweather’s final training session took place Wednesday evening in front of a select group of media, friends, family, coaches, and fighters. That night a video of Malignaggi and Mayweather laughing and joking together surfaced, which may have proven that Malignaggi could have been a spy for Mayweather all along.
Reyes was in attendance along with Malignaggi at Mayweather’s gym, who both agree that Mayweather looks incredible. “We were invited to the Guerrero training camp, the Canelo training camp, Maidana training camps,” explained Reyes, speaking exclusively with FanSided.
Reyes has witnessed Mayweather in the final stages of preparation for some of his toughest opponents in his career. “This reminded me of when we watched him for his final practice for Canelo,” stated Reyes.
Knowing what Malignaggi told him about McGregor’s skills and how Malignaggi himself fared during their sparring sessions, Reyes says the Irishman is in for a rude awaking on Saturday night.
“I know for a fact, that if you can’t do (expletive) to Paulie, you definitely won’t do (expletive) to Floyd,” Reyes flatly stated.
UFC President Dana White released a pair of short video clips from the McGregor/Malignaggi sparring sessions, which showed McGregor having success, and even a hotly debated knockdown of Malignaggi. Despite the public reaction to the videos, Reyes reassured there’s a reason those clips are only a few seconds long taken from twelve-round sparring sessions.
But did Malignaggi have an underlying motive in training with McGregor? Was he really being an undercover operative for Mayweather based on the video of the two shown joking together?
“Floyd and Paulie have known each other for years and they’re friends,” explained Reyes. “For me, when people watch it, get out of it what you want to get out of it.
“The truth of the matter is, does any of it even matter? If what you believe you’re watching there is true, what could Paulie possibly tell Floyd that Floyd doesn’t already know?”

Despite what the Showtime All Access and UFC Embedded video blogs would lead you to believe, Reyes can confirm that Mayweather has been training just as hard for this fight as he has any other opponent he’s faced in recent years.
“The way he looks right now? Man … He’s going to knock Conor the (expletive) out!” exclaimed Reyes.
Mayweather and McGregor weigh-in for the fight on Friday evening, with the fight taking place on Saturday evening live on pay-per-view.
