College Football Rankings: AP Top 25 poll – Week 2
The Top 25 is going to have a new team in the top five after No. 3 Florida State lost to No. 1 Alabama, but what other changes will there be?
The two biggest stories from the opening week of the 2017 college football season came from the same game. No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 3 Florida State was the best game on the Week 1 schedule and it fell a little shy of living up to the hype. That was simply because Alabama was just too good and their defense and special teams were the difference in them picking up the win. But things got worse for Florida State than just suffering the loss to Alabama, quarterback Deondre Francois left the game in the fourth quarter with a knee injury. The following day, it was confirmed that he suffered a torn patella tendon and is out for the rest of the year.
Florida State was already bracing to take a few tumbles in the Week 2 Top 25 due to the loss, but the loss of Francois could see voters moving the Seminoles even further down their list. Fair or unfair, that’s something that voters will ponder as they cast their vote.
The Seminoles may not be the only team in the preseason top 5 to move down. The USC Trojans won a close one against Western Michigan but struggled for the first 3.5 quarters. Could voters penalize Sam Darnold and the Trojans for winning by less than prognosticators expected? It wouldn’t be the first time that happened. Considering the impressive wins over Clemson, Penn State and Oklahoma behind them in the rankings, it’s possible one or more of them could leapfrog USC, despite the win.
