Mets: Jose Reyes a viable fantasy option down the championship stretch?
By Brad Kelly
Jose Reyes has been on a tear at the plate as of late for the Mets. But, is the veteran worth a fantasy add down the championship stretch?
The New York Mets are nothing short of a disaster. Tasked with championship aspirations every season, the team has failed to live up to expectations, especially in 2017. While nearly every player on the roster has seemingly missed time this season at some point, Jose Reyes was simply terrible the first half of the season.
But, now on fire at the plate, could he now be a viable waiver wire add?
Jose Reyes was once a fantasy dynamo. The 15-year veteran is no stranger to fantasy owners as he was a first round talent in his prime, and had maintained fantasy value for nearly a decade. He has predictably faded as he has gotten older. and it looked as though he may have finally reached the end of his line during the first half of this season.

Over the first half, he posted an anemic .215/8 HR/29 RBI/10 SB/.655 OPS. If not for all the injuries, the Mets’ would have probably moved on in a perfect world, but they had no choice but to continue to trot him out there. At that point, he was of course off the fantasy radar.
Reyes welcomed the end of the first half and the turn of the calendar to July. Since July 1, Reyes is on a tear at the plate. Over the last three months, he has posted at least a .269 AVG per month, while amassing seven homers, 23 RBI, and ten homers over that span.
More importantly for fantasy owners, Reyes is still on fire at the plate over the last two weeks. Most fantasy owners are in the playoffs or have the championship weeks kicking off soon, making Reyes all of a sudden an intriguing option.
While he has slowed down some, Reyes is still a threat on the bases. Speed is nearly non-existent on the waiver wire, yet Reyes is available and has snagged five bases over his last 50 at-bats. The power stroke is also becoming a fixture of his game as he has four homers over the span, including a two homer performance a week ago versus the Reds.

Fantasy owners have to be encouraged that he is refining his approach in an effort to walk more and get on base as well. With a more focused approach at the plate and his still solid speed, owners now have a waiver wire add that could pay huge dividends.
Make the move, and roster Jose Reyes once again.
