Both Canelo Alvarez and GGG have shown major knockout power throughout their careers leading up to their fight, but did the match end in a KO on Saturday?

There’s nothing more exciting in the world of boxing than a great knockout. It’s part of what makes the sport so unlike any other. While there’s a scoreboard (the judges cards) ostensibly, boxing stands out because that can all be rendered meaningless with one punch. And both Canelo Alvarez and GGG had proven coming into their massive bout on Saturday, Sept. 16 that they can end a fight in an instant.

Canelo may not be as known for knockout power as GGG, but he has plenty of it. Coming into the match in Las Vegas, NV, Alvarez had knocked out 34 fighters in his 49 career wins and 51 career fights. That’s a solid 66.7 percent knockout rate for the Pride of Mexico, certainly nothing to scoff at.

However, the power that Gennady Golovkin has shown over his career is just astounding. He’d fought 37 times professionally before Saturday night, and 33 of those had ended by way of knockout. Yes — only four of GGG’s fights had gone to decision. Not only is that 89.2 percent knockout rate unreal, but it’s made even crazier when you then add in Golovkin’s 23-straight KOs that spanned from 2008-17.

Given the knockout potential of both fighters, the notion that their megafight on Saturday could end in such a manner was definitely on the table. Between Golovkin’s precision and power and Alvarez’s counter-punching, it was a fight that could’ve gone a number of ways in the end.

But when it was all said and done, did Canelo vs. GGG end in a knockout?
