Derek Fisher’s Dancing With The Stars debut was perfectly ridiculous
By Tim Ryan
Several former pro athletes have appeared on Dancing With The Stars over the years. The latest? A very sparkly and out of hand, Derek Fisher.
Remember back in 2006, when three-time Super Bowl Champion and all-time NFL rushing leader Emmit Smith took part in ABC’s Dancing With The Stars of all things?
If not, consider yourself blessed.
But most avid sports fans probably do.
At the time, it all felt pretty strange, especially when Emmitt happily held the famed “Mirrorball” trophy in formalwear seemingly designed by the late Ultimate Warrior.
Ah yes, it was quite a moment.
Since then, it’s become commonplace for pro athletes to appear on DWTS. From the great Jerry Rice to Chad Johnson to Metta World Peace, it’s a lengthy list.
Well, earlier this week, Derek Fisher became the latest and greatest to appear on the show that is somehow in its TWENTY-FIFTH season.
Without further ado, here’s dancin’ Derek Fisher:
That sincerely felt like a 60-second snippet from one of the worst 80s movies ever made.
But just like anything else, the reviews are likely mixed and so far my favorite headline has come from SB Nation, alluding to Fisher’s showing as “an affront to basketball and dancing.”
I would certainly say it was an affront to my precious eyeballs, as the sparkling, bedazzled spectacle was completely out of control.
It was also rather offensive to witness Fisher give up his famed No. 2 and instead wear No. 25 to honor the current season of Dancing With The Stars.

To top things off, Kurtis Blow’s “Basketball” was blown to smithereens and promptly sent through a wood chipper for good measure, because that was just awful.
And while they were Blow’s original lyrics, they remain absurd.
These two lines in particular successfully melted my brain:
"Basketball is my favorite sport,I like the way they dribble up and down the court.I like slam dunks, take me to the hoop,My favorite play is the alley-oop."
Thanks, ABC!
Prayers up to Laker Nation, the Buss family and the entire NBA; except for Matt Barnes.
