White Sox Yoan Moncada Showing Off For Next Season
By Bill Pivetz
White Sox prospect Yoan Moncada is heating up as the season is coming to a close. This is a good showcase for what he can do next season.
The Chicago White Sox received a nice haul for Chris Sale last December. The main piece was infielder Yoan Moncada. After a poor summer, Moncada is hitting well and could be showing us what to expect in a full season next year. I would pick him up for the final days of this season, too.
Moncada entered September with .188 in 30 games. He was called up on July 19. He had three home runs, 11 RBI and 13 runs. Moncada also had a .328 on-base percentage with 44 strikeouts and 19 walks. He was displaying good patience but was a little unlucky with his batted balls.
After missing another 10 games, Moncada returned on Sept. 5 and has looked like a new batter. In his last 15 games, 71 plate appearances, he has a .313/.380/.531 line with four homers, nine RBI and 14 runs scored.

The only negative is that he has 21 strikeouts and six walks. Over a full 162-game season, that averages to 65 walks and 227 strikeouts. If you play in a points league that deducts for strikeouts, I would avoid him at all costs.
Over the last week, Moncada has three home runs and six RBI with a .367 average. Things are looking up for the 22-year-old second baseman.
Fantasy owners are also taking notice to Moncada’s improvement over the last month. He’s been added in 24.7 percent of ESPN leagues but he’s still available in 57 percent of leagues.
There may not be much of a market for a low power second baseman, but there is value in a middle infielder hitting .380 in his last 10 games, all on the road.
As for next season, Moncada won’t rank inside my top-25 second baseman. However, in AL-only or deeper leagues, he will garner some attention. He may also make his way up to the top 20 at some point next season.

Moncada is playing well to end this season, making himself worth adding. He is also auditioning for a roster spot on fantasy teams for next year. As a middle infielder or fill-in option, Moncada is a deep sleeper for success in 2018.
