Huddersfield began their first test against elite Premier League opposition much they way you’d expect from a side in their first season in the top flight since the early ‘70s, pressing Tottenham onto the back foot and even forcing Hugo Lloris into the first notable save of the match.

But there’s no substitute for quality, and there’s arguably no player in the Premier League better right now than Harry Kane. The Englishman scored his 12th goal of the month in the ninth minute, slotting easily past Jonas Lossl after Chris Lowe missed what should have been a straightforward clearance.

From there, Spurs were rampant. Ben Davies doubled their lead in the 16th minute, finishing at the back post after Christian Eriksen was tackled by Christopher Schindler at the top of the box. The bounce was somewhat fortuitous but just reward for the wonderful, one-touch passing sequence that preceded it.

Then, once more, as always, there was Kane, whose left-footed curling finish from 20 yards in the 24th minute showed just exactly what makes him so special. If there was a suggestion earlier in his career that he was merely a poacher, the finisher of his teammates’ good work, he has put that emphatically to rest in the past couple of seasons.

This was just latest example of his ability to conjure something from nothing, to drive his team forward even without their help. That he received plenty of it at John Smith’s Stadium made what was always going to be a difficult task for the Terriers an impossible one.

Tottenham understandably took their foot of the gas in what was an uneventful second half. The only two moments of note saw Dele Alli booked for a dive in the Huddersfield penalty and Moussa Sissoko, a late substitute, bundle in in stoppage time to make it 4-0.

The win moves Tottenham up to third place in the table, where they’ll stay at least until Chelsea and Manchester City play later in the day. Huddersfield are 10th, but could fall as low as 14th depending on the weekend’s other results.
