There are plenty of reasons the Giants wouldn’t call Victor Cruz

The New York Giants aren’t calling Victor Cruz, and he apparently doesn’t understand the reasons why.

If being 0-5 isn’t bad enough, the New York Giants lost wide receivers Odell Beckham (leg), Brandon Marshall (ankle) and Dwayne Harris (foot) to a virtual kinetic chain of season-ending injuries last week. Second-year receiver Sterling Shepard also came out of Week 5 with an ankle injury, and he’s been declared out for Week 6 with a multi-week absence looking likely.

The Giants have shuffled in wide receivers from their practice squad this week to fill out the active roster. One available option from outside the organization, former Giant Victor Cruz, came up on Monday. But head coach Ben McAdoo dismissed the idea, while not saying never, but all indications are the Giants have no eyes on a reunion.

But Cruz has started a campaign for a reunion, On his podcast, he revealed that his agent reached out to the Giants and was told they would see “exactly where they are and get back to him.”

But here’s the money quote from Cruz, in an effort to find reasons the Giants wouldn’t call him (via Newsday)

“I’ve been literally thinking to myself of reasons why they wouldn’t and I can’t think of any,” Cruz said on his Uninterrupted podcast, “The Victor Cruz Show.”

Apparently Cruz doesn’t remember the diminished version of himself the Giants got from 2014-2016. A severe right knee injury limited him to six games in 2014, and a left calf issue cost ultimately him the entire 2015 campaign. He did play 15 games last season, but Cruz tallied just 39 receptions for 586 yards and a touchdown while frequently playing limited snaps.

On top of that, Cruz was cut by the Chicago Bears in early September. Cameron Meredith was gone with a torn ACL by then, though Kevin White was not yet injured again. But the Bears were comfortable going forward with White, Kendall Wright, a since-injured himself Markus Wheaton, Josh Bellamy and Deonte Thompson as their top wide receivers. That fairly bare cupboard says it all about where Cruz is at this point.

If the Giants wanted Cruz, they could have him. But they’re instead choosing, at least for this week, to go with Roger Lewis, Travis Rudolph and Tavarres King as their top wide receivers against the Denver Broncos. Cruz needs to get the signal the NFL is trying to kindly give him–his career is over.
