Edmonton Oilers head coach Todd McLellan announced today that star forward Leon Draisaitl will be out for a while as he is dealing with concussion-like symptoms.

The Edmonton Oilers will be without one of their star forwards as Leon Draisaitl is dealing with concussion-like symptoms. The injury was originally thought to be an eye injury, but Todd McLellan said today that Draisaitl is dealing with concussion-like symptoms.

Draisaitl, 21, has been a big part of the success Edmonton had in 2015-16. He burst onto the scene in 2014-15 with 51 points in 72 games. And while playing alongside Connor McDavid for much of last season he had 77 points in 82 games.

The injury to Draisaitl was originally thought to be an eye injury. Oilers head coach Todd McLellan announced Saturday that it could something much worse. He did not, however, offer any sort of timetable for a return for Draisaitl.

Draisaitl suffered the injury as a result of a hit on him by Winnipeg Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba. He looked to have pain in his eye, and then this was announced Saturday.

This is a huge blow to the Oilers, especially if he ends up being out long-term. Regardless, Draisaitl is a massive part of the Oilers top six and has shown during the 2016-17 season and the short period of this season that he and McDavid are the clear-cut top two players on the Oilers roster.

Draisaitl didn’t only score goals and provide them, he also compares favorably in deeper numbers. He had a 1.96 Relative Corsi-For Percentage (Rel.CF%) during the 2016-17 season. For those of you who are not familiar with Rel.CF%, you generally aim for 1.00 or higher to judge the season as a success for an individual.

Along with his impressive Rel.CF% he also had 0.82 primary assists per 60 last season. This just goes to show how worried the Oilers should be if this ends up being a long-term issue.
