Watford came from behind to earned a well-deserved, if somewhat scrappy, 2-1 win against Arsenal at Vicarage Road on Saturday thanks to a Troy Deeney penalty and Tom Cleverley’s 92nd-minute winner.

The first half was about as forgettable as the final 10 minutes were exciting, with neither side creating a notable chance until the 39th minute, when Per Mertesacker, starting in place of the injured Shkodran Mustafi, headed in unmarked to give the Gunners the lead.

They probably deserved it, on the balance of play, but though Alex Iwobi and Alexandre Lacazette looked dangerous, they couldn’t threaten Heurelho Gomes with any regularity.

Watford began to assert themselves more in the second half and the match became slightly more open after the hour mark.

Iwobi forced an excellent save from Gomes in the 63rd minute and Mesut Ozil should have scored when he found himself through on goal in the 70th minute, but his finish was straight at the keeper.

The miss proved costly, as Watford won their penalty less than a minute later, when Richarlison was brought down by Hector Bellerin. The decision was harsh on Bellerin, who appeared to do little wrong, but it was just reward for an excellent display by the Brazilian.

With the game seemingly headed toward a draw, Cleverley snatched three points for his side in second-half stoppage time, finishing emphatically after Arsenal failed to clear two Hornets efforts on goal.
