Oklahoma City Thunder replace Kevin Durant, officially and numerically

Thunder give the No. 35 jersey to newly acquired P.J. Dozier.

Ask and you shall receive. After being cut by the Dallas Mavericks, free-agent P.J. Dozier signed a two-way deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Only, there was likely going to be a slight problem; Dozier wore the No. 35 as a member of the Mavericks. You may recall a former Thunder star wore the No. 35 jersey, he goes by the name of Kevin Durant. However, after asking to wear the number, the organization gave it to Dozier.

If you thought Oklahoma City had any intention of hanging Durant’s No. 35 from the rafters at Chesapeake Arena, think again. Albeit petty, the Thunder and its players have yet to fully cope with Durant’s departure. Of course, this is not the first act of pettiness between the two sides. During his homecoming to Oklahoma City, Durant was met with a series of cupcake signs and memorabilia from fans. The Warriors later had fun with Thunder cupcake joke, sporting cupcake symbols after a finals win. Although, it’s unlikely that the undrafted rookie meant any harm or disrespect by this act.

Dozier’s college number, No. 15, is currently being worn by Kyle Singler. In addition, chances are we won’t even see the No. 35 Thunder uniform this season in the NBA. Maybe from time to time, but not on a regular basis. Dozier is set to teeter-totter between the G-League and the NBA. Regardless, it should give the two sides a good chuckle anyways. Durant has yet to comment on the subject, but his agent saw the act as one of disrespect. He took to Twitter to express his disgust with the Thunder. But again, Oklahoma City couldn’t care less about Durant’s agent’s thoughts. As the NBA opener draws closer, so do the petty wars. Let the season and petty feuds commence, if this is any indication as to how the season will go, strap on your seat belts.
