Just seconds after it looked like Carmelo Anthony won it for Oklahoma City, Andrew Wiggins broke the heart of Thunder fans with a buzzer beater.

Andrew Wiggins is putting his money where his mouth is.

Even though Karl-Anthony Towns is the most important player on the Minnesota Timberwolves, Wiggins is their best scorer. The progression he’s made in his offensive game is a big reason why he signed a five-year, $148 million contract extension in the offseason.

Through the first three games of the 2017-18 season, he’s lived up to that max contract by scoring at least 21 points in every game. But his best performance came in a high-profile showdown against the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he nailed the game winner at the buzzer to silence the Chesapeake Arena.

His shot came just after newly-acquired Thunder Carmelo Anthony seemed to win it with four seconds left:

Before that shot, Wiggins was 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. But he calmly drained the game winner from 31 feet out. While Wiggins has always been a phenomenal scorer, it looks like he’s taken the next step in his development, which is adding a killer instinct.

As long as he keeps burying winners like this, he’ll be a revered figure in Minnesota. His detractors, meanwhile, will keep pointing to his poor defensive play and his hero ball tendencies. Does that sound like someone else who used to play?

As for the Thunder, their Big 3 experiment has gotten off to a 1-2 start. It may seem like the sky is falling, and that George and Anthony will almost certainly leave after this season, but the last thing fans should do is panic. They still have one of the most talented rosters in the NBA, and almost erased a 13-point deficit in one quarter. They will go through chemistry issues in the early part of the season. It was already pretty surprising to see Westbrook pass up the shot to Anthony.

By the time the Thunder hit their stride, the rest of the league had better watch out. We should all hope to see this matchup again come playoff time.
