NBA players share their memories on AIM in its final days

Friday is the last day of AIM’s existence, and some of the NBA players usernames are interesting.

AOL’s instant messenger is peak “only 90’s kids remember”. Coming home from school everyday, and so long mom and dad weren’t trying to make a phone call you could get on AIM and chat with your friends. I personally didn’t have a screen name, because I was more of a MySpace guy.

For those of you that had a screen name, Friday is the final day that you’ll be able to access it before AOL will discontinue your childhood memory. Some of the screen names, and memories that NBA guys shared with Bleacher Report are absolutely hilarious.

I find it interesting that the younger guys in the league were actually asked about AIM. Phoenix Suns guard Tyler Ulis had no clue what it was, and had to be given a more in-depth explanation about the program before he got it. Ulis was born in 1996 so by the time he was old enough to use a computer, social media sites like Facebook and MySpace were already on the scene.

If Tyler Ulis had no clue what it was I find it hard to imagine that many of his teammates will either. Back in March the Suns ran out the youngest starting lineup in NBA histroy. Their average age was just over 21 years old. They were around for the good time when you didn’t have to wait until mom got off the phone so you could use the internet.

As for some of the older guys they know all about AIM. Pretty much everybody had the same routine. Come home from basketball, and hop right on the computer. Seeing as most of them were in love with basketball all of their screen names were basketball related.

New York Knicks center Joahkim Noah had it better than everybody else. He’s the son of former tennis great Yannick Noah, so someone being on the phone was never a problem since he had two phone lines. His screen name ‘Doggystyle’ named after Snoop Dogg’s album from 1993 was crucial with the ladies. If there was one person that never had a problem with the ladies online it was J.R. Smith who was very blunt in saying he never had a problem.

I never had AIM so what were some of your memories?
