It’s rivalry weekend in the NFL. That’s right. It’s Week 17 and it all comes down to this in the final week of the 2017 NFL regular season. There is no game with greater stakes than when the NFC South rivals clash between the Carolina Panthers (11-4) and the Atlanta Falcons (9-6). Kickoff from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will be at 4:25 p.m. ET on Dec. 31.
Carolina has already clinched a playoff berth in the NFC. The Panthers are 11-4 on the season and could be anywhere from No. 2 to No. 5 in the NFC playoff picture. With a win and a New Orleans Saints loss, the Panthers will win the NFC South for the fourth time in five years. A loss would ensure them as the No. 5 seed heading into wild card weekend.
Atlanta is one of two teams left in the NFC fighting for a playoff berth. At 9-6, the Falcons can clinch the No. 6 seed with a win at home over the rival Panthers or a loss by the Seattle Seahawks to the Arizona Cardinals. Atlanta holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over 9-6 Seattle. While this season has not gone smoothly for the defending NFC Champions, they will have a shot at redemption if they can knock off Carolina at home on New Year’s Eve.
