With the calendar changing from 2017 to 2018, West Ham and West Brom are both hoping that their New Year’s resolution of winning more games actually happens. At the end of 2017, both the Hammers and the Baggies find themselves at the bottom of the Premier League table and facing potential relegation. The outcome of Tuesday’s game between West Ham and West Brom could determine which team is relegated and which team survives at the end of the season.
The decision by West Ham to fire Slaven Bilic and hire David Moyes was both praised and criticized by pundits. While time had run out for Bilic, the decision to hire Moyes was questionable after the former Everton and Manchester United manager had a terrible season at Sunderland. While the results have been better under Moyes, he has not found a solution for the Hammers’ terrible defense. Only Stoke have allowed more goals than West Ham this season. Offensively, West Ham have been middle of the pack but Marko Arnautovic caught fire in December. The Austrian international scored five goals in December ahead of the club’s final game of 2017 against Tottenham.
The Baggies started the season with back to back wins but it has all been downhill from there. Over their next 18 games, West Brom lost nine games and tied nine games. While the Baggies have been average defensively, they have been one of the worst offensive teams, as only Swansea have scored fewer goals than West Brom.
