The 2018 NBA trade deadline had plenty of fireworks despite initial worries it could be dull. The Cavaliers made the biggest splash by completely remaking and reshuffling their roster in what could the final hurrah for LeBron James in Cleveland. But one of the more puzzling deals was one that didn’t occur, with the Grizzlies electing to not trade impending free agent Tyreke Evans. ESPN’s Zach Lowe and others reported Memphis had multiple offers of two second-round picks but that wasn’t enough.

All of this despite the Grizzlies being locked in a tight tanking battle, without Bird Rights to exceed the cap to re-sign Evans, and having sent him home a week ago in preparation of an anticipated move.

So to figure out if there is any upside to this puzzling non-move and to assess all of the other activity from trade deadline day, Dave DuFour (@DaveDuFourNBA) joins the latest episode of Fastbreak Breakfast. Dave is contributor at bballbreakdown.com and hosts the On the NBA podcast. In addition to trying to make sense of the Grizzlies decision (spoiler: he cannot), he also address the following topics:

  • Who will start for the new-look Cavaliers?
  • Why did Cleveland have to include their 1st-round pick in the trade with the Lakers?
  • Is there any historical precedent for the plunge in perceived value of Isaiah Thomas?
  • What does trading Rodney Hood mean for the Jazz’s playoff push?
  • Who were the other winners and losers of trade deadline day?
