There is an obvious WrestleMania main event that WWE needs to book

WrestleMania is just under a month away, and there are rumors floating about what will be the main event —but all of those choices are wrong.

The biggest wrestling event of the year take place on April 8 in New Orleans and WWE needs to pick a lane for the main event of the evening. The smart money since the match was announced was that defending Universal Champion Brock Lesnar would defend against Roman Reigns in the bout that goes on last. Some fans wouldn’t be overly excited about this, but it does make sense.

Lesnar is reportedly considering heading back to UFC, and these two are still owed a proper finish from their match in 2015. For anyone that forgets, one of the greatest WrestleMania moments happened that night. Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and stole the title, so Lesnar and Reigns have unfinished business.

However, rumors have suggested that WWE is cooling on this match being in the main event slot. There is some fear that Lesnar would receive a very unfavorable reception given that many fans who attend WrestleMania are “smart” fans and know Lesnar is likely out the door. That same segment of fans typically isn’t very happy with Reigns winning anything, although that’s not always fair. WWE is doing its absolute best to rally fans behind Reigns at the moment. They’re steering into Lesnar potentially leaving, which is the smart way to play it. That doesn’t mean it will work, and the match could get booed right out of the building. That’s not what WWE wants the last impression to be on the biggest show of the year.

So let’s say that match is out for various reasons. The next match up is frankly an even worse decision if it’s the team of Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey vs. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. There is just no reason this match deserves the main event slot. Triple H very rarely wrestles any more. Kurt Angle has been in a WWE ring as a wrestler once in the past 11 years. Stephanie as a wrestler? Please.

Rousey is a big deal within the mainstream media, but is also as raw as they come inside the ring. WWE is also getting questioned as to why she wasn’t on this past episode of Raw when WWE said she’d be at every one leading up to WrestleMania. They already have issues with a part-time performer with UFC connections. They don’t need another. Besides, what in the world has Rousey done to deserve the main event spot? Absolutely nothing is the answer.

So what are the options left? There are some rock solid matches on the card. Even though the build for some have been pretty iffy, the in-ring action promises to be excellent. Some of the confirmed/rumored matches left all have reasons not to be the main event, however.

Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka – This match is going to be off the charts good as they have arguably the two best female wrestlers on the planet locking horns for the SmackDown Women’s title. As good as the match may be, it would be a hard sell to main event WrestleMania. That’s not trying to be sexist or unfair, it’s just the way things are. It’s also a little unfortunate as the match is main event quality. WWE just runs the risk of too many fans tuning out.

The Miz vs. Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins – If the WWE treated the Intercontinental title like it was important, this match could easily main event the show. Three of the most talented men in the company have a great feud going, and this should be a fantastic match to cap it off. The title just doesn’t rank high enough for the spot. Look for this match to potentially be the best of the bunch.

The Bar vs. Braun Strowman – WWE chose to just cast every tag team on Raw aside so the Bar could have a chance to “Get These Hands” from Braun Strowman. While Strowman has been incredible for the past year or so, this seems like a step down for him. He laid waste to the entire Elimination Chamber last month only to bow to Reigns. Even though he could beat the tag champs by himself, he deserves a much higher spot on the card. He should just threaten to hijack everything until he gets a title match.

The only two matches left with the star power to warrant consideration both come from SmackDown. One is the whatever type of match comes from the grudge that Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Shane McMahon have going. While it is KOMania 3 season and some fans want him to be in the main spot, having a McMahon in there just doesn’t fit the bill. That leaves us with one option, and it is clearly the best on the table.

A.J. Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura should 100 percent be the main event on the grandest stage of them all. Their build hasn’t really started in full throat yet, but these two are pros. They’re masters at building a feud even if they have a short time to make it happen. They can both have five-star matches in their sleep. The Phenomenal One vs. The King of Strong Style will tear the place apart if given the amount of time they deserve.

They’ve each been at the top of other promotions, and Styles is a multi-time champ in WWE already. Nakamura started against Sami Zayn in NXT and was spectacular from his very first match. This is a no-brainer. It’s the match most of the fans want to see, especially the folks shelling out the amount of money for a WrestleMania weekend.

WrestleMania is typically about giving the fans what they want. Roman Reigns is going to win the Universal title. There’s no debate about that. It’s almost a lock Rousey and Angle are going over in their match. Both of these matches have disaster potential in the main event spot. WWE should do right by their fans and give two of the best in the world the spotlight to close the show in the Big Easy.
