The Orioles will be without their DH Mark Trumbo for the first few weeks of the season. What does this mean for fantasy?

The Baltimore Orioles received some negative news Thursday, two weeks before Opening Day. Their DH Mark Trumbo suffered a Grade 2 quad strain and will miss three to four weeks of action. With him likely to miss the first couple of weeks of the season, what does this mean for his fantasy value?

Trumbo was coming off 23 HR/65 RBI/.234 season over 146 games. That was just one year after hitting 47 home runs and 108 RBIs. He was a 22nd round pick in standard ESPN leagues but finished as 334th overall on the Player Rater.

The Orioles offense is good, not great. With Manny Machado in the lineup, you can’t have a bad offense. They also have Adam Jones, Tim Beckham and Jonathan Schoop. The loss of Trumbo hurts the power potential of the lineup.

As a replacement, the Orioles don’t have anyone that can replicate his power. They do have bodies that can fill his spot in the lineup. Veterans Colby Rasmus and Danny Valencia are competing for a roster spot and will likely get some at-bats with the absence of Trumbo.

The Orioles also signed Pedro Alvarez to a minor-league deal. He has a similar batting profile to Trumbo, with 20-home run power. Though, he will likely hit .235 in the process.

None of these batters here are worth rostering, no matter how deep your league is. Losing Trumbo does affect the value of his teammates some but they will be able to hold their own until he returns.

Trumbo is coming into the season with a 231.0 ADP. He’s someone you will keep on your bench and start every once in a while if the matchup is right or one of your starters is hurt. His 20-30 home runs are nice to have that late in the draft.

With the likelihood of missing the first few weeks of the season, Trumbo’s ADP will fall, making him undraftable in standard leagues.

Trumbo is a power hitter. There are plenty of them to be had late in the draft. Corey Dickerson is going just a few picks ahead of him and Shin-soo Choo is being drafted in the next round. Trumbo’s absence hurts AL-only leagues but with his DH-only eligibility, mixed-league owners won’t sweat it as much.
