The 30 best players in World Cup history

26. Zbigniew Boniek, Poland
Few stars of the World Cup have been as relentless as Zbigniew Boniek was in 1978, ’82 and ’86. His breathtaking pace was combined with an endless and varied range of runs to make Boniek the focal point a gifted generation for the Eagles.
Not a natural striker, nor a particularly creative attacking midfielder, Boniek was a false 9 way before the term became popular. He first showcased his talents in Argentina in ’78, scoring twice to help Poland qualify for the second group stage under a bloated format.
It was respectable effort, but the nation was ready for more four years later. Inspired by Boniek, the Poles took Spain by storm, finishing third.
Their star man scored a memorable hat-trick to beat a strong Belgium side in the group stage. Unfortunately, Poland were left to rue Boniek missing the semifinal defeat to eventual winners Italy through suspension.
He was back as the Poles beat France to finish third.
Things didn’t go as well in 1986, as Poland again only reached the second round, losing 4-0 to Brazil.
Boniek was the central figure for his nation’s greatest footballing moments.
