Blue Jays Teoscar Hernandez stays impressive: Waiver Wire Add?
By Brad Kelly
Teoscar Hernandez is on fire at the plate for the Blue Jays. Should fantasy owners buy into the hot start or leave him on the waiver wire?
The Toronto Blue Jays are one of the bigger surprises in MLB so far. Sitting second in the AL East after winning six out of seven, the Blue Jays are firing on every level. One of the key contributors to that success lately is Teoscar Hernandez. Hernandez is killing the ball right now, but should fantasy owners buy into his success?
We lauded Hernandez as a potential sleeper heading into 2018, yet the Blue Jays added multiple outfield pieces in the offseason which blocked his path to the majors. He impressed in his 26 game cameo for the Jays last season, .261/8 HR/20 RBI/.908 OPS. He continued that success this spring, but the Jays still decided to keep him in the minors.
No one will question that the Jays are in the middle of a rebuild and Hernandez is a key element to that, yet it seems like his service clock is partly why he did not get promoted faster. With Josh Donaldson on the DL for an indefinite time, and Kendrys Morales banged up, Hernandez finally had a path to at-bats.

The Blue Jays stole Hernandez from the Astros in the Francisco Liriano deal. No one will question the raw talent that Hernandez holds. He has a 21 HR/33 SB campaign under his belt and has shown the continued ability to square the ball up with ease. His AVG potential is capped to around .270 because of his uber-aggressive approach though, but the bat skill overrides those concerns.
This brings us to his first three games this season. Over 19 at-bats, he has notched eight hits, a homer, and six RBI. He has struck out five times but has a walk as well, but his five XBH jump off the page. He swiped a base, even though fantasy owners would like to see him become more aggressive there in order to further round out his game.
He is being slotted in the two hole, helping his counting stats even if the lineup is missing Donaldson. Adding Morales back, Curtis Granderson still getting on base at a solid clip, and Justin Smoak still in the middle of the order, Hernandez stands a good chance at quality compiling numbers.

Fantasy owners will not find a hotter hitter on the waiver wire, nor one with more upside than Hernandez. He continually shows the flashes that have made him one of the more intriguing prospects in the game, and now what makes him intriguing enough to add off the waiver wire.
Make the move.
