The Washington Capitals came away with another nailbiter overtime win over the Blue Jackets for the first home win of the series to take a 3-2 series lead.

What. A. Game. Once again in this series between the Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets, a game goes to overtime for the fourth time. This time it was the Capitals who prevailed for the first win on home ice for either team, and they take their first lead of the series as they go up 3-2.

Nicklas Backstrom scored the overtime winner on a deflection of a Dmitry Orlov shot from the blue line to give the Capitals a 4-3 win and a 3-2 series lead.

Now after trailing this series 2-0 early on, the Capitals can close out this series with a win on the road in Columbus in Game 6 to advance to round two.

Three Stars

3. Matt Calvert: The Blue Jackets came up short in Washington, but not at all because of Matt Calvert. Matt Calvert put up two goals for the Blue Jackets in Game 5, and completely changed the course of the game. Calvert opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal to take the air out of Capital One Arena, then scored an accidentally phenomenal spin-o-rama on Braden Holtby to tie the game at two. Calvert has done his job this series, but now the Jackets find themselves behind.

2.Braden Holtby: The lord and savior of the Washington Capitals is Braden Holtby, bar none. Philipp Grubauer took over the starters net for Games 1 and 2 and the Capitals dropped them both for a 2-0 series deficit. Holtby retook the net in Game 3 and has been dominant since . While the first goal in Game 5 he gave up was weak, Holtby was superb ever since. The Capitals had no buisness taking that game to OT after getting out shot 16-1 in the third period, but Holtby made multiple massive saves to keep the Capitals alive.

1.Nicklas Backstrom: You wanted to see more from Nicklas Backstrom this series? Ask and you shall receive. Nicklas Backstrom put together one of his best playoff performances in a couple years with a three point night that included two massive goals. Backstrom responded to the Blue Jackets opening tally by banking a shot from the behind the net off of Sergei Bobrovsky and Thomas Vanek in front to get his first goal of the series, and of course deflected Orlov’s wrist shot from the point in overtime to give the Capitals their first series lead of these playoffs.
