Elliot Gerard on collaboration, creativity and the art of the NBA
By Keith Parish
Elliot Gerard has been creating NBA art for as long as he can remember. And he’s gone from honing his skills by sketching a Slam Magazine cover of Steve Francis nearly twenty years ago to having LeBron James tweet out his artwork last season.
Now he’s finished a project he calls #NBACollab that he hopes both gives some needed exposure to artists and serves as creative encouragement for everyone. Elliot paired with different artists to create an illustration for every NBA team. From a recent article featured on The Step Back:
“I have always been drawn to collaborating ever since I was a kid,” Gerard told The Step Back. “I used to draw with my friends together on the same piece of paper and I had more fun with that than just creating it by myself.” -The Art of Collaboration by Ian Levy
On the latest episode of Fastbreak Breakfast he explains how the series started, how the NBA trade deadline improved some of the pieces, and why everyone needs to collaborate more.
Also covered:
- What happened when he found out LeBron James had shared his illustration?
- How has he turned his passion and creativity into a career?
- Which pieces in the #NBACollab series turned out the most differently from what he initially envisioned?
- Does he regret any of the artistic choices he made in the collaborations?
