Twins Fernando Romero looks impresive: Waiver Wire Add?
By Brad Kelly
Fernando Romero pitched well during his first major league start for the Twins. But, did the rookie do enough to be added off the waiver wire?
The Twins are scuffling out of the gates this season, and have not had a lot to celebrate about. Yet, Fernando Romero’s debut should inspire confidence and intrigue moving forward. But, have fantasy owners seen enough to make him a waiver wire add?
A key to adding off the waiver wire during the season is to look for players that are producing, yet also offer upside. Fernando Romero entered the 2018 season as one of the best Twins’ prospects and was being universally ranked as one of the top-100 prospects in all of MLB.
The 23-year-old has impressed routinely on his way to the majors, recovering nicely from TJ surgery in 2015. Last season at AA, he ended the year with a 3.53 ERA/120 K/1.35 WHIP over 23 starts. He did not let up a run during his eight innings this spring either, carrying a ton of momentum leading into his three starts at AAA before his promotion in 2018.

The Twins desperately needed someone to join Jose Berrios as an ace type of level arm, and Romero offers just that. Scouting reports on Romero are usually all raving about his stuff. His fastball routinely sits in the upper-90s, his slider has sharp break, and his changeup has steadily developed.
With his pitches all moving, even his fastball is mainly of the two-seamer variety, he does battle his command at times. He made his first start versus the Blue Jays in early May, posting five scoreless innings while striking out five.
He was admittedly amped up, yet showed great mound presence to fight out of the jams he created. The stuff is unquestioned, making him one of the more intriguing arms left on the waiver wire. Romero’s command may suffer at times thanks to all his pitches having movement, but his raw stuff certainly makes up for it.
His next outing comes against the Cardinals this weekend. With his upside, polished delivery and pitch mix, Romero is well worth a waiver wire add. The scary part is that he will get more and more settled, meaning he will be able to harness is already overpowering stuff more.
