2018 Indianapolis 500 qualifying results: Ed Carpenter wins the pole
Ed Carpenter is your Indianapolis 500 pole sitter after a stunning run in Indy 500 qualifying. Here are the complete Indianapolis 500 qualifying results.
The Indianapolis 500 starting grid has been set for 2018, and Ed Carpenter will be beginning next week’s 102nd Indianapolis 500 in the pole position after a mind-blowing performance in the Sunday qualifying session.
Carpenter was the only driver whose average reached the 230 MPH mark and earned his third career Indy 500 pole position. All three of the cars from Ed Carpenter Racing qualified in the first three rows.
Championship leader Josef Newgarden qualified fourth. One year after the vicious qualifying crash that ruined most of his season, Sebastien Bourdais made the Fast Nine Shootout and will start in fifth place.
There were some true shocks at the back of the field. 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi will start 32nd of 33 entries on Sunday, after a disastrous qualifying effort that may have involved a tire issue. After almost making the Fast Nine on Saturday and how he’s second in the 2018 IndyCar standings, it’s stunning to see Rossi start that far back and he will have a lot of ground to make up. So will Graham Rahal (30th) and last year’s standout rookie Ed Jones (29th).
