Is anyone attempting the Indy 500/Coca-Cola 600 double in 2018?

Is anyone trying the most difficult feat in all of motorsports in 2018?

One race of 500 miles or more is pretty tough even for the best drivers. Two on the same day, especially ones as prestigious as the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600? That’s just downright impressive, and it’s something that a few drivers have pulled off in the past, racing at Indianapolis and then using helicopters and private jets to get to Charlotte in time for the NASCAR night race.

There’s even an obvious candidate this year in Danica Patrick, who makes her return to the Indy 500 and has famously raced at the top level of NASCAR for the last few years. Still, she’s making her goodbye to racing strictly at Indianapolis, and no one else is trying the Indy 500/Coca-Cola 600 double this year either.

The only NASCAR Cup Series driver who has made some noises about trying the double in recent years has been Kyle Busch, who seems very willing to give it a shot but has implied that his NASCAR team owner, Joe Gibbs, has been reluctant to give him the green light. That’s understandable considering how much he has invested in Busch as his team’s top gun —and it should be noted that Busch also has yet to win a Cup Series race at Charlotte, which could reinforce Gibbs’ stance to have him concentrate on the Coca-Cola 600 — but you have to figure that we’ll see Rowdy at least strongly consider it before his career is over.

Another NASCAR driver whose name has circulated among the potential Memorial Day weekend double rumor mill is Kyle Larson. A racer’s racer if there ever was one, you’d have to figure he’d be up for the challenge if things fall into place for him to attempt it.

But if Busch, Larson or anyone else is going to attempt the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, it’ll have to wait for another year. No one if doing the double in 2018, so enjoy the races without looking for anyone in both of them.
