5. San Antonio Spurs

If some unforeseen miracle keeps Kawhi Leonard in a Spurs uniform, then this idea probably holds very little weight. Then again, both Danny Green and Rudy Gay hold player options they could or could not exercise. Meanwhile, Tony Parker’s contract is up and Manu Ginobili is on the books for just $2.5 million. Kyle Anderson is also not under contract for next season. All this is to say the San Antonio roster is sure to undergo changes, but whether the changes are a complete overhaul or cosmetic still remains to be seen.

The longer one looks at the situation, signing a player like Barton starts to seem both like a possibility and not a bad idea. He would improve the roster, and if signed to a reasonable contract, he could either serve the franchise well in a rebuilding effort or as a possible trade asset down the road.

If Green and Gay both opt in, the Spurs probably don’t consider chasing a player like Barton. But, if the situation goes nuclear, then the front office will need to decide what to salvage, what to cast aside and who can do the salvaging. Barton seems like the kind of player who can help.
