The Minnesota Timberwolves added athleticism and a player with a high compete level to their backcourt, taking Josh Okogie out of Georgia Tech.

Josh Okogie spent two years at George Tech and was consistent during both seasons. As a freshman, he averaged 16.1 points-per-game. He upped that average to 18.2 points-per-game in his sophomore season. His three-point percentage stayed at 38 percent in both seasons, but he did improve on his rebounding and assist numbers. He averaged 1.8 steals and 1 block per game in his sophomore season.

Okogie is a well-rounded prospect, but still a bit raw. He plays hard on both ends of the floor, which Tom Thibodeau will love. Given Thibodeau’s stagnant offense, Okogie will fit right in as the primary scorer when the ball is in his hands or a guy who can stand around and hit open shots if the ball happens to come to him. He needs to work on his shot off the dribble and playmaking, but attacks the basket well and gets to the free throw line.

The Timberwolves took a big step forward this past season, making the playoffs on the final day of the regular season. There are concerns over Andrew Wiggins and his work ethic. Jimmy Butler is reportedly not happy with Wiggins’ attention to detail on the defensive end. That won’t be an issue for Okogie. He’s a guy that can come in a immediately push Wiggins. Whether or not it works, remains to be seen.

As we all know, Thibodeau runs his starters into the ground during the regular season. With Jamal Crawford opting out and likely headed elsewhere, the Timberwolves needed a win off the bench who could spell Butler and Wiggins for the five minutes they are allowed on the bench. Okogie fits the bill in that regard.
