Obviously channeling the negotiating powers of Kris Jenner, Boone Jenner swindles Columbus Blue Jackets into a major extension.

If you’re looking for free money, the Columbus Blue Jackets are out here giving some away. According to SiriusXM NHL Radio producer Bruce Bolton, Columbus has re-signed forward Boone Jenner to a four-year deal with an average annual value of $3.75 million.

Did they think Kylie and Kendall were part of the deal, as well?

For those unfamiliar with the work of Jenner (Boone, not the famous sisters), he scored 30 goals. In 2015-16. Since then, he’s seen his goal total drop to 18 in 2016-17 to 13 last season. Getting noticeably worse production in a three year period is typically not how you earn a big contract. But maybe Columbus really likes his puck possession numbers.

Oh, he’s had a below average Corsi rating in four of his five seasons. He must always show up to practice with homemade cookies. Cookies are the only logical explanation for this deal.

In all seriousness, Jenner is just 25 years old and was the assistant captain last season. Columbus obviously values his leadership and believes he can be a 30-plus goalscorer once again. But this isn’t a team with a whole lot of money to spend. It currently has $11 million in cap space, has a lot of long term money tied up and will have to shell out a ton of money next offseason.

Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky are both unrestricted free agents next offseason. Panarin could command nearly $10 million if he has another 75-plus point season. Bobrovsky will be due a raise on his $7.4 million deal if he wins 30-plus games again. Columbus will also have to work out deals for restricted free agents Sonny Milano and Zach Werenski. Wereski’s deal certainly won’t be cheap.

If you’re wondering why Columbus has a fire sale at the end of next season in order to retain Panarin, Bobrovsky, and Werenski, it’s because on July 5, 2018, they thought it would be wise to give Jenner nearly $4 million a season for four seasons.
