The BMX dirt contest kicks off on Friday, July 20, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and some of the best names in the sport will be competing.

The X Games are a staple of extreme sports. Twice a year, the very best action sports athletes get together to show what they’ve got. When the X Games were founded in 1995, BMX was one of the original events. BMX began on the dirt before later expanding out to the vert ramp, the street park, best trick and Big Air.

One of the most famous riders to ever compete in the BMX dirt competition is Ryan Nyquist. This year, Nyquist will be making his 20th X Games appearance as he looks to score his fifth X Games gold medal.

BMX dirt was one of the first events in X Games history. BMX has a long history of entertaining fans with crazy tricks and even bigger personalities. Ryan Nyquist has asserted himself as one of the best to ever grace the dirt track. Winning his first X Games medal in dirt in 1997, Nyquist has gone on to earn a total of 16 X Games medals over his 20 years of appearances.

After missing the games in 2017, Nyquist is back and ready to add more hardware to his trophy cabinet.

“I grew up riding dirt, and it’s everything I love about riding,” Nyquist said via his X Games bio. “It’s strictly jumping. You know exactly where you’re going; you just fill in the tricks. I like the simplicity of it. It was my first love; it always holds a special place in my heart.”
