College Football Results Against The Spread Week 5 2018
There were some really good college football games in week 5, but not a ton of upsets. Seven ranked teams fell, but only two fell to unranked teams and both of them were in the bottom five of the top 25.

I had a really good week in ESPN College Pick Em with 49 points, so I hope that success carried over here. I started the week well, but I know I missed a couple of big ones.
Here we will recap my picks against the spread. The winner against the spread will be in BOLD. My result will follow. Let’s get to it!
In case you want to follow along:
Thursday-Friday
Picks for week 5
Let’s kick this off with the Thursday and Friday games!
North Carolina at Miami(FL)(-16.5): HIT! This was just a whoopin delivered by the Hurricanes here, especially on defense. Miami didn’t allow a point after the first quarter while piling on 33 of their own.
Memphis(-13.5) at Tulane: MISS! This was quite a show by the Tulane defense. The offense as well. It looks like the Green Wave may have finally found their feature back.
UCLA at Colorado(-9.5): HIT! As expected, the Ralphies ran off with this one with 24 second half points to just three for the Bruins.
Louisiana at Alabama(-48.5): MISS! 14 garbage points by the Cajuns took this one away. Bama was up 49-0 at halftime and 56-0 early in the third quarter before they essentially quit trying.
Syracuse at Clemson(-25.5): HIT! The Orange should have shocked the college football world again, but they couldn’t stop Travis Etienne.
West Virginia(-3.5) at Texas Tech: HIT! Just when it looked like West Virginia was going to run off with this, Jett Duffey comes in and makes this very, very interesting. Alan Bowman could have a hard time getting his job back even when healthy.
Central Michigan at Michigan State(-28.5): HIT! In all fairness, the Spartans didn’t even have this covered before the huge fourth quarter rally by the Chippewas.
Arkansas vs.Texas A&M(-20.5): MISS! A 14-0 start by the Aggies quickly went by the wayside as the defense forgot that the Arkansas offense was bad. Strange things happen in rivalry games though.
Indiana(-16.5) at Rutgers: MISS! This was a pathetic showing by the Indiana offense, especially in the second half. There’s no other way about it.
Army at Buffalo(-7.5): HIT! Dear Vegas, keep sleeping on Army. Thanks. Sincerely, my pocketbook.
Oklahoma State(-17.5) at Kansas: HIT! If Cornelius had hit all of the open deep routes, the Cowboys may have doubled this line. That’s how open the Oklahoma State receivers were all game.
Temple at Boston College(-12.5): MISS! If Dillon had played the entire game, I’m pretty sure BC would have covered. I still feel my instincts were right, but there’s nothing you can do about in game injuries. This turned into Ryquell Armstead’s coming out party at the expense of the BC D.
Bowling Green at Georgia Tech(-28.5): MISS! There is a reason I don’t do over/unders. Tech almost hit the over by themselves…..
Virginia at North Carolina State(-5.5): HIT! This was another methodical showing by the Wolfpack. We should all expect that by now.
Massachusetts at Ohio(-13.5): HIT! This one was worth finding. The teams combined for 35 first quarter points and 100 overall. We don’t need no stinking defense!
Louisiana-Monroe(-6.5) at Georgia State: MISS! This was just a beating. Monroe couldn’t stop anything the Panthers did.
Kent State at Ball State(-7.5): HIT! This was quite a show by Riley Neal and the Ball State offense. Get used to seeing more of this in the MAC season.
Tennessee at Georgia(-30.5): MISS! Rarely has an offense looked so boring scoring 38 points. I guess that is part of the Georgia charm. It also keeps that defense fresh enough to dominate.
Baylor at Oklahoma(-23.5): MISS! That’s what I get for picking against my team. Baylor did rattle off chunk plays though. enough to make me very nervous about some upcoming teams on the schedule.
Pittsburgh at Central Florida(-13.5) HIT! I’m not sure anyone can beat UCF again this year. They still wont get a crack at Bama though unless the Tide wind up in the Sugar Bowl.
Texas(-8.5) at Kansas State: MISS! More ugliness by the Texas offense. They looked good jumping out to a 16-0 lead, then the offense just disappeared….
Cincinnati(-17.5) at Connecticut: HIT! If you thought this game looked exceptionally ugly, it was. This was UConn’s worst home loss in 18 years. Middle Tennessee State beat a then transitional FBS UConn team 66-10 back on November 4th of 2000. At what point do the Huskies tell Randy Edsall thanks for all the memories, but we need to go a different way? This is worse than it was when he got (back) here.
Old Dominion at East Carolina(-6.5): HIT! This was another one worth hunting down. This was a back and forth affair the whole time. All of the sudden, Old Dominion is perhaps the most interesting 1-4 team in the country.
Coastal Carolina at Troy(-14.5): MISS! I knew better. At least Troy put me out of my misery quickly.
Western Michigan(-2.5) at Miami(OH): HIT! MACtion started early this year. It wasn’t Tuesday night MAC lunacy just yet, but it had all the fun of it! The only bad part was that few got to watch this entertaining spectacle.
South Alabama at Appalachian State(-25.5): HIT! App State got to live like Bama for a week. They were up 42-7 at halftime.
Rice at Wake Forest(-27.5): HIT! The Wake third string defense certainly made me sweat this one….
Purdue(-3.5) at Nebraska: HIT! Nebraska’s offense looked pretty good here. A lot of it had to do with Nebraska realizing they had Devine Ozigbo in the backfield. If only he could play defense….
Florida State(-6.5) at Louisville: MISS! That was pretty good for a freshman’s first start. In other news, I’ve seen moss covered sloughs full of mosquitoes less stagnant than the Florida State offense.
Southern Mississippi at Auburn(-27.5): MISS! Auburn didn’t even score enough to cover this. The Tigers can’t be considered elite with an offense this bad.
Nevada at Air Force(-3.5): MISS! Air Force was so desperate for offense that they turned to their third string quarterback without injuries forcing them to. It almost worked! Almost…..
Michigan(-14.5) at Northwestern: MISS! Where did that come from? I guess I underestimated how good the Northwestern defense is and/or how bad the Michigan offense is. Maybe a little of both.
Florida at Mississippi State(-7.5): MISS! This was a really great defensive effort by the Florida defense. The offense was still a disaster though.
Utah(-1.5) at Washington State: HIT! As expected, this was a very good game. Who would have guessed that the game winner would be an 89 yard touchdown? Utah’s defense just doesn’t allow that!
Liberty at New Mexico(-7.5): HIT! I knew this was bogus. I only wish I would have put more on it. If you get a chance to watch Liberty quarterback Stephen Calvert, do it. He may wind up at the next level!
Arkansas State(-3.5) at Georgia Southern: MISS! Hansen had a good game. The rest of the team? Not so much….
Northern Illinois at Eastern Michigan(-2.5): HIT! This was another very entertaining MAC game. With them happening on a full Saturday, did anyone notice? Probably not. This was a triple overtime game in which only 49 total points were scored.
Virginia Tech at Duke(-4.5): MISS! I’m pretty sure the Virginia Tech secondary was wearing Duke uniforms in this game. The investigation is pending…..
UTEP at UTSA(-10.5): MISS! Any feel good you had from watching some great MAC games all went away on this atrocity. I really need to quit watching games like this…..
Florida Atlantic(-2.5) at Middle Tennessee State: MISS! This was another great game. I love watching Singletary run, but this line is going to get him injured.
Boise State(-16.5) at Wyoming: HIT! Actually, I think the Boise offense got tired from all that running around in the first half. They nearly blew this!
Hawaii(-10.5) at San Jose State: MISS! Maybe the poor play on the mainland is a thing again for the Warriors. That said, this was your most entertaining game of the weekend. Where else did you get five overtimes?

Charlotte at UAB(-16.5): HIT! How in the world did Charlotte win two games?
Iowa State at TCU(-10.5) HIT! That Iowa State defense helps overshadow how disappointing the offense can be. They had plenty of chances to win this outright.
Ohio State(-3.5) at Penn State: MISS! I did manage to take this line at -3, and put a larger chunk than I normally would on it. If only they would have made that stupid two point conversion…. In other news, it’s nice to know that the Penn State defense can still get after it if they show up interested.
Stanford at Notre Dame(-5.5): HIT! This was a methodical beating by the Irish. It was very clear who the better team was in the second half of this game.
South Carolina(-1.5) at Kentucky: HIT! Kentucky is finally going to get some respect now. Maybe. At first glance, it doesn’t look like it.
Louisiana Tech at North Texas(-7.5): MISS! I wont really say that the Bulldogs handled Mason Fine, but the defense played well enough to leave Denton with a win after giving up 21 to Fine in the first quarter.
Marshall(-3.5) at Western Kentucky: MISS! I really felt like the Herd played well enough to win by more than this. Somehow the Hilltoppers hung around.
BYU at Washington(-17.5): MISS! Wow, that BYU offense looked awful. They have been a slow, plodding unit all year, but I didn’t realize just how unimpressive they were until Washington just dominated them.
Mississippi at LSU(-10.5): HIT! That LSU offense looks pretty good against inferior defenses.
Oregon State at Arizona State(-21.5): HIT! Manny Wilkins only threw for 162 yards, and the Sun Devils still scored 52 points.
Oregon(-2.5) at California: HIT! Easy money. Cal was never really in this game.
USC(-2.5) at Arizona: MISS! I knew better. I read what I wrote and thought I had taken USC. Hmm…..
Toledo at Fresno State(-9.5): MISS! I knew Fresno was going to put up points, but they put on a pretty good show defensively as well. And Jordan Mims just isn’t fair. He is a mismatch waiting to happen.
I had another week over .500 at 28-27. I was cruising until the evening games. That puts me at 129-125 on the season. Not bad for the first third of the season. If I keep it up through the rest of the year, I’ll be very close to that 55% goal.
Even though I finished above .500, I’m still pretty sure i lost points thanks to a lot of things not going as planned. If my three pointers were my fives, I’d be sitting pretty right now. Let’s check the damage.
This week’s totals follow the number. The season totals are in parentheses.
1. 6-3 (24-22) = 2
2. 9-13 (50-54) = -8
3. 8-3 (35-27) = 24
4. 3-6 (14-16) = -8
5. 2-2 (6-6) = 0
I was only down two points this week, but ideally we don’t want to lose anything. That puts me at 10 points in the black on the season and 32 points in the three years and a month that I’ve been making the point bets. My largest real life bets last weekend were on Florida State and Ohio State. My freeplay is almost gone now, but I did hit my bet last night. It’s time to make the little bit I have in there work for me so I can get back in the game.
