AUSTIN, TX – NOVEMBER 03: David Sills V #13 of the West Virginia Mountaineers catches a pass for a touchdown defended by Josh Thompson #29 of the Texas Longhorns in the second quarter at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on November 3, 2018 in Austin, Texas. (16)West Virginia vs. (20)Syracuse(-1.5) at Orlando, FL(1):

West Virginia 8-3, 6-3(t-3rd Big 12(10)

Wins: vs. Tennessee(40-14), vs. Youngstown State(52-17), vs. Kansas State(35-6), at Texas Tech(42-34), vs. Kansas(38-22), vs. Baylor(58-14), at Texas(42-41), vs. TCU(47-10)

Losses: at Iowa State(14-30), at Oklahoma State(41-45), vs. Oklahoma(56-59)

Record vs. bowl teams: 3-3

The big news here is that Will Grier is sitting out the bowl game. How are the Mountaineers going to replace 3,864 passing yards and 37 touchdown passes? Especially since this team doesn’t have a strong running game. David Sills and Gary Jennings are going to be Jack Allison‘s best friends.

Allison’s most extensive experience came against Baylor in which he threw a whopping four passes, completing all of them. Allison only threw ten passes all year. That’s about two drives worth for Grier.

Syracuse 9-3, 6-2(2nd ACC Atlantic):

Wins: at Western Michigan(55-42), vs. Wagner(62-10), vs. Florida State(30-7), vs. Connecticut(51-21), vs. North Carolina(40-37), vs. North Carolina State(51-41), at Wake Forest(41-24), vs. Louisville(54-23), at Boston College(42-21)

Losses: at Clemson(23-27), at Pittsburgh(37-44), vs. Notre Dame(3-36)

Record vs. bowl teams: 4-3

Eric Dungey, just like last year, made this offense go. We all saw what happened when he was forced to leave the Notre Dame game early. Moe Neal is a capable back, but he is much more of a threat when Dungey is also a threat to run.

When this offense was rolling, it was something to watch. However, the defense was a sore spot. Giving up 23 to a stagnant Louisville offense showed that the large totals allowed to the North Carolina teams and Pitt weren’t flukes.

Prediction:

West Virginia opened as a seven point favorite, but now the line has swung all the way for the Orange. How much of West Virginia’s potency was because of Grier? How much was because of the receivers? We know the offense is going to be different with Allison under center, but how much?

Vegas thinks a lot different. Honestly, this is another I would avoid. When the line swings this much, we really don’t know what’s going to happen. I still like West Virginia in a close but high scoring game. The Syracuse defense was gouged a few hundred too many times for me to trust them.

Pick: West Virginia
