Arkansas State vs. Nevada(-1.5)at Tucson, AZ(2):
Arkansas State 8-4, 5-3(t-1st Sun Belt West)
Wins: vs. Southeast Missouri State(48-21), at Tulsa(29-20), vs. UNLV(27-20), vs. Georgia State(51-35), vs. South Alabama(38-14), vs. Coastal Carolina(44-16), vs. Louisiana-Monroe(31-17), Texas State(33-7)
Losses: at Alabama(7-57), at Georgia Southern(21-28), vs. Appalachian State(9-35), at Louisiana(43-47)
Record vs. bowl teams: 0-4
Oklahoma transfer Justice Hansen had another strong year, but unfortunately for the Red Wolves, they don’t have much around him. The defense played a lot better down the stretch, but Arkansas State hasn’t played a bowl team since late October.
Nevada 7-5, 5-3(t-2nd MWC West):
Wins: vs. Portland State(72-19), vs. Oregon State(37-35), at Air Force(28-25), at Hawaii(40-22), vs. San Diego State(28-24), vs. Colorado State(49-10), at San Jose State(21-12)
Losses: at Vanderbilt(10-41), at Toledo(44-63), vs. Fresno State(3-21), vs. Boise State(27-31), at UNLV(29-34)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-4
Well, at least Nevada beat a bowl team. That’s something. I really like this Nevada offense. The defense is often a wreck, but they haven’t given up more than 30 since mid October.
Ty Gangi is just the latest in what is becoming a long line of productive Nevada quarterbacks. Sophomore receiver McLane Mannix is the favorite target for Gangi, but freshman Toa Taua came on big at the end of the season.
Prediction:
This game could be pretty high scoring. Arkansas State is a good passing offense. Nevada is well rounded, but their line needs to get some push if Taua is going to change this game. This could be a lot like the Baylor-Vanderbilt game. The last one with the ball wins.
I was a little surprised that this game opened with Arkansas State favored. This is a close game for the Wolfpack fans that are going to migrate down from Reno. That and I find it hard to trust a team that didn’t win a game against a bowl bound school. I realize that the Sun Belt often gets the bowl shaft, but the conference didn’t give them a lot to think about either.
Pick: Nevada
