The Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs have played each other to a standstill. Who will take control of this series in Game 5?

The Nuggets and Spurs split the first four games of their first-round series with just eight points (+8 for Denver) separating them across those 192 minutes. As even as those numbers sound, it is generally the Spurs who have appeared to have the upper hand. They took Game 1 on the road. They were only beaten in Game 2 because Jamal Murray began shooting lightning bolts from his fingertips and dropped 21 in the fourth quarter. They bounced back and took Game 3 by double-digits and, again, only lost to an extraordinary performance from Nikola Jokic in Game 4.

However, with a chance to reset, that gives us a fairly accurate picture of these two teams. The Spurs are steadier, more even and more experienced. They know how to control a game. The Nuggets are still learning how to do that but the talent gap they have with Jokic and Murray raises their ceiling much higher than San Antonio’s and gives them a chance to win games in unorthodox ways and unusual scenarios.

If the Nuggets get strong games from Murray and/or Jokic, they should be in a position to take control of the series and move one step closer to advancing. However, if they falter, San Antonio is more than ready to step in and take advantage.

This series certainly has the feel of one headed for a Game 7. Both teams woozy but still standing, the Nuggets throwing haymakers while the Spurs, bob-and-weave and keep jabbing. How will Game 5 set the stage for what comes next?
