The Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers split the first two games of their second-round series. Who can take control in a pivotal Game 2?

The Blazers have to be feeling good right now. After dropping Game 1 against the Nuggets, they came back and took Game 2 on the road, despite Damian Lillard playing one of the first playoff games of his career, despite hitting just 9 3-pointers, despite another elite performance from Nikola Jokic and despite giving up 23 offensive rebounds. The series is shifting back to Portland and they have a chance to take an unbreakable hold on the Nuggets. They can’t count on Denver only hitting 6-of-29 3-pointers in a game again, but they can also count on the fact that Lillard is not likely to give them so little again.

It’s heartbreaking for the Nuggets to lose a game with such an outlier poor shooting performance but at least nothing is broken in their offense. Of the 29 3-pointers they attempted in Game 2, all but one were classified as open or wide open — no defender within four feet of the shooter. Their shooters are just too good to have another performance quite that bad and if they can keep defending well and get production for Jokic they will be right back in the thick of things.

Portland is a very strong home team, tied for the third-best home record in the league during the regular season, outscoring opponents by an average of 8.1 points per 100 possessions in the Moda Center. The Nuggets aren’t out of things yet, but the Trail Blazers definitely have an advantage.
