Jon Moxley announces he is out of All Out match with Kenny Omega
Jon Moxley vs. Kenny Omega is off for AEW’s All Out after Moxley confirms he is dealing with MRSA in his elbow.
Earlier in the week, the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer (subscription required) reported that Jon Moxley had “some kind of an elbow injury. It may be an infection that he got in Japan.” It raised concerns that Moxley might not be able to compete in his scheduled bout with Kenny Omega at All Elite Wrestling’s All Out pay-per-view, set for August 31.
On Friday, Moxley revealed the news himself via Twitter that he will have to pull out of the match:
Moxley shocked the wrestling world by showing up at AEW‘s Double or Nothing event in May, attacking Omega after Omega’s match with Chris Jericho. It had been one of the most anticipated matches on All Out’s card, a dream pairing between two of the hottest wrestlers of the time.
But now, Moxley will have to take an indeterminate amount of time to heal from the infection, which, as Meltzer notes, was likely a result of an injury sustained while Moxley took part in the grueling New Japan G1 Climax tournament, which ran from July through August.
The more important thing, though, is Moxley’s health. This isn’t his first experience battling a severe staph infection. Moxley (f/k/a Dean Ambrose in the WWE) revealed to The Monitor (h/t to Cageside Seats, as the original article seems to have vanished) that he “nearly died” following a MRSA diagnosis that developed from numerous surgeries to repair a torn triceps.
The good news, though, is that this should be a less complicated, time-consuming recovery than the last, with Moxley tweeting that he is going to “have surgery this week to remove the bursa sac in my elbow and be done with it for good,” and adding that the recovery should be quick enough that he’ll be able to compete when AEW on TNT makes its October debut.
AEW has already announced a new opponent for Omega — PAC, f/k/a Neville in the WWE, who was expected to appear in an All Elite Wrestling ring at some point after dropping his Enter the Dream Gate Championship earlier this summer.
Here’s to a speedy, non-complicated recovery for Moxley and that he can get back in the ring soon.
