Trevor Lawrence is back to being Trevor Lawrence
Don’t look now but Trevor Lawrence is back to doing Trevor Lawrence things for Clemson and the rest of the nation is on notice.
He’s baaaaack. That’s what Clemson fans are saying after seeing Trevor Lawrence cut up Florida State for four total touchdowns while barely breaking a sweat on Saturday afternoon. Lawrence was in a bit of a sophomore slump to begin the year but he broke out of that vs. the Seminoles and the rest of the college football world is on notice.
You heard all the superlatives lofted Lawrence’s way the past several months. After torching Alabama in the National Championship Game, his name was bandied about, including from me, as someone who would have been the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft despite being two years from being eligible for the draft.
He was compared to Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck as the best quarterbacks in modern college football. He was going to win the Heisman the next two years and lead Clemson to more national title glory. All that was seemingly pre-ordained for Lawrence.
And then the season started and Lawrence looked like a player who spent all offseason reading about how great he was. Of course, he didn’t. He just looked human for the first time on the college level. Seeing a player with his talent and potential was shocking to see him look mortal. He was supposed to be a football-playing deity who was devoid of growing pains.
Of course, that just doesn’t happen. Even Manning and Luck had their struggles.
Everyone, including Kirk Herbstreit, had a theory about what was wrong with Lawrence and how he could get right.
Expectations may have been supersized like that order of fries you got from McDonald’s but it’s not like Lawrence forgot how to play great football.
After throwing five interceptions in the first three games, more than he had all of last year, the skeptics were out saying Lawrence was overrated. They were wrong and they should feel bad for being so wrong.
Then again, there’s a rush for everyone to make grand proclamations when it comes to sports and social media at our fingertips. It opens up the door for many dumb things to be said. Writing off Lawrence is among the dumbest.
Lawrence was surgival against Florida State, throwing 17-of-25 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns. He did have an interception, but he also ran for 40 yards and a touchdown as he continues to showcase his mobility as a sophomore.
If it wasn’t for Clemson’s defense playing so well and Florida State being so bad, Lawrence would have played longer in the second half. He could have padded his stats to make his numbers look even better. But it wasn’t needed today. Lawrence is back and in a groove. Clemson got right on the bye and used the scare vs. North Carolina two weeks ago as the wake-up call I predicted it would be for them.
Teams had their shot to take advantage of Clemson while Lawrence got right. Now, it’s too late and the rest of the college football world is taking notice of the prodigal son’s return.
