2020 NHL trade deadline: Rumors, signings and notable news tracker
By Mary Clarke
The 2020 NHL trade deadline is here, bringing with it rumors big and small. Here’s all the important information you need to know.
The 2020 NHL trade deadline is set for Monday, Feb. 24 this year, marking a major milestone in the 2019-20 season. The NHL trade deadline is often where big hockey moves are made by teams looking to stock up for a deep playoff run or teams looking to secure a draft lottery spot amid a failed season.
Though the day of the deadlines themselves have been less active in the past, the weeks leading up to the trade deadline are often rife with activity and talk about potential moves. This season, the biggest trade deadline acquisition — Taylor Hall — was shipped off from New Jersey in December and found a home in Arizona months before the deadline.
Pittsburgh, however, made the first major move of the 2020 trade deadline two weeks ago by acquiring winger Jason Zucker from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forward Alex Galchenyuk, a 2020 conditional first-round pick and defensive prospect Calen Addison.
With the Penguins kicking off the trade market, Los Angeles Kings’ Tyler Toffoli was the next domino to fall, as the Vancouver Canucks swooped in to nab the forward’s in-demand services last week. Montreal Canadiens forward Ilya Kovalchuk was dealt the night before deadline, landing in Washington with the contending Capitals.
With all the noise out there, here are the biggest rumors, signings and notable pieces of news you need to know as the 2020 NHL trade deadline approaches.
