Paper Mario is back for another adventure, and this time it’s called Paper Mario: The Origami King. Here’s everything you need to know about the game.
We’ve seen Mario and friends in the 3D world, but nothing beats a good old 2D Mario game like Paper Mario. And Nintendo’s promising another Paper Mario adventure coming to the Nintendo Switch. This one’s titled Paper Mario: The Origami King.
The gaming company surprised many fans with this announcement on Thursday, as it came out of nowhere like a Bullet Bill in the sky.
Judging by the trailer, this new take on the old favorite will look absolutely stunning, and the origami element adds an original touch to an already familiar game. So, when will the game come out? In just under two and a half minutes, Nintendo managed to wow us all with a short glimpse of the Paper Mario gameplay. It begins with a creepy Princess Peach asking if Mario will fold himself to be origami-shaped like her. He refuses and falls into a trap. From there, we see the different types of characters and gameplay that’ll make up the story, and the supposed villain behind it all: King Olly, the ruler of the Origami Kingdom.
Here’s how Nintendo describes the plot of the game:
"Mario faces one of his most thrilling challenges yet in Paper Mario: The Origami King when the dangerous King Olly unleashes his plan to fold the entire world. Just when matters couldn’t get worse, he’s bound Princess Peach’s Castle in giant, colored streamers and transported it to a distant mountain. He’s even transformed Bowser’s minions into Folded Soldiers and enlisted them in his treacherous cause."
The game will also feature new additions to help Mario in his fight, such as the 1000-Fold Arms, which will allow you to reach out and grab items. There will also be a ring-based battle system that’s very much a puzzle-like mechanic, and there will also be other mini-game events throughout.
Paper Mario: The Origami King release date
The good news about this surprise announcement is that the game will be out sooner rather than later. Paper Mario: The Origami King’s release date is July 17, 2020. You can look out for physical copies of the game or buy it on the Nintendo Switch online store. Of course, this is only a Nintendo Switch exclusive and won’t be on any other gaming system.

Like most all Nintendo games, the price for Paper Mario: The Origami King will be $59.99. Nintendo games rarely go on sale, so it’s likely this price won’t change at all — at least on the Nintendo Switch online store. If you want to purchase a physical copy of the game, you may be able to apply coupons at checkout at your retailer of choice. Also, don’t forget that Nintendo Gold Points can be used toward purchases.
