Mario is heading toward its 35th year anniversary, and a new report says that a backlog of his games could be coming to the Switch.

The latest sensation Animal Crossing: New Horizons may not be the best thing to come to the Nintendo Switch this year. According to multiple reports, remasters of the Super Mario catalog could be coming to the Switch beginning this year.

The VGC reports these remasters are coming in anticipation of Mario’s 35th year anniversary this year. The first Mario game, Super Mario, was released in Japan in 1985. And since then, as we know, Mario has made a major impact on the gaming world, releasing across pretty much every Nintendo platform through now.

Both VGC and Eurogamer have confirmed on their end that Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy are all due for remasters as far as this anniversary launch. The games are all beloved by Nintendo fans — and while the graphics were one of a kind back when they were released, it’ll be even more interesting to see something like the mid-90s’ Super Mario 64 get released with Mario Odyssey-like graphics or even something a little newer like the Wii’s Mario Galaxy getting the same treatment.

On top of that, it looks like there will also be several new games to be released alongside the remasters. As VGC says in its report:

"Nintendo will also release several other Mario titles in 2020, including a new instalment in the Paper Mario series and a Deluxe version of 2013’s Super Mario 3D World."

As of now, there’s no word on exactly when the announcement will be made. Before the novel coronavirus pandemic broke out, this announcement was apparently supposed to take place at E3. As many know, the June event was canceled due to the coronavirus this year, so that leaves the door open for Nintendo to announce this through a different avenue.

In the meantime, there are plenty of Mario games for fans to enjoy on the Switch already. Odyssey has definitely become something of a flagship game for the Switch. But Super Mario Bros. U: DeluxeMario Maker 2 and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 (which hasn’t aged well at this point) are also some favorites already available.

The announcement will apparently come along with more information on the Super Nintendo World theme park as well as the new Super Mario movie. So it seems like a lot is in store for Mario on his 35th year anniversary. In the meantime, this is the perfect time for fans to dust off the Wii or 3DS and pop in some Mario classics just for old time’s sake.
