The Onion perfectly trolled Mike Gundy t-shirt fiasco at Oklahoma State
By John Buhler
The Onion gives a hilarious take on the Mike Gundy OAN t-shirt fiasco.
Don’t expect Mike Gundy to wear shirts supporting The Onion any time soon.
“America’s Finest News Source” had a field day with the Oklahoma State football coach and the t-shirt scandal. Gundy was photographed wearing an OAN t-shirt while on a fishing trip at Lake Texamo over the weekend. Key players on the Oklahoma State roster like running back Chuba Hubbard and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga threatened to boycott all things Oklahoma State.
After a tumultuous Monday morning and afternoon surrounding his players voicing their displeasure for wearing a white t-shirt depicting a far-right wing political network channel, Hubbard and Gundy appeared on a video that evening to clear up the situation and say things were changing in Stillwater. Do you think it was awkward? It sure looked like it from the PSA.
That one video maybe wasn’t enough, as ESPN’s Paul Finebaum called for Gundy to be fired. If he would, there would be a ton of interesting questions surrounding his buyout from Oklahoma State University. Gundy then released another video message on Tuesday evening, this feeling more angry than apologetic. It felt scripted because it didn’t feel all that sincere.
So how does The Onion poke fun at something that’s very serious? They flip the script and make it an NCAA t-shirt Gundy is wearing in their hilarious satire post on Tuesday afternoon. What student-athlete doesn’t not love the NCAA? Of course, they’d clap back over their head ball coach wearing an NCAA t-shirt.
The Onion knocks it out of the park over the Mike Gundy t-shirt fiasco.
The reason this troll is so perfect is because a head coach wearing an NCAA shirt signifies he’s not a supporter of the name, image and likeness movement sweeping across college athletics. Why pay college athletes financial compensation on all things NIL? They’re getting free room and board, education and more swag than they’ll ever know what to do with.
This latest article is yet another reason why The Onion has had the success it has over the years. They take a hot-button topic, flip it on its head, spin it around like a top and here you go. We end up getting this masterpiece of an article that somehow makes light of something so serious. Satire is great when you get it, but when you’re the type that doesn’t, that’s a you problem, man.
The Onion just provided us yet another t-shirt Gundy can’t wear without offending his players.
