There’s hope for Dak Prescott contract extension drama finally ending next month.

Ever since quarterback Dak Prescott turned down a contract extension from the Dallas Cowboys worth a reported $33 million per year back in September, the standoff between the two parties has been fraught. Jerry Jones and Co. were forced to use the franchise tag on the former fourth-round pick when his rookie contract officially ran out.

There’s been very little progress on this front since the Boys slapped Dak with the tag three months ago. Fortunately, courtesy of insider Jay Glazer, there’s finally reason to believe that a long-awaited resolution is in the offing.

When will Dak Prescott finally sign his extension with the Dallas Cowboys?

For players under the franchise tag in 2020, the NFL is enforcing a deadline of July 15 for multi-year contract extensions. After that point, only a one-year contract would be permitted for the current season, a moot point given Dak’s $31.4 million payday under the tag. In so many ways, Jerry and Stephen Jones have had the Ides of July circled on their calendars for months.

And they might just be able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Prescott has plenty of ammo to support his case to be among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler and two-time NFC East champ in just four professional seasons, and no gunslinger converted first downs on third and long in 2019 at a higher rate.

That aint’ too shabby, either.

Critics will point to the fact that even if Prescott deserves a major pay raise, he just isn’t worth a contract in the neighborhood of perennial MVP candidate Russell Wilson’s $35 million per year. If the alternative is letting him walk away and starting Andy Dalton instead, however, Cowboys fans will find themselves faced with the easiest of easy choices.

Keep the faith, Big D. The offseason suffering could soon be over.
