DeSean Jackson’s antisemitic comments have sparked a hopefully meaningful conversation with Julian Edelman.

Despite public apologies, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson is continuing to take heat posting anti-Semetic quotes on Instagram. Fellow players like New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman are still wondering if Jackson’s comments came from a place of hate or a place of ignorance. No matter what the root cause, Edelman understands that Jackson needs to learn the meaning behind his words, and he called Jackson up to tell him just that.

Edelman claims that he spoke with Jackson last night, confirming that the pair are “making plans to use our experiences to educate one another and grow together.”

DeSean Jackson is finally realizing the consequences of his actions.

This comes immediately after Edelman, who himself is Jewish, proposed that he accompany Jackson to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in an effort to get the veteran Eagles wideout, who is entering his second year on a three-year contract with Philadelphia, more educated on the subject of anti-Semitism to prevent similar posts in the future.

After some silence in the immediate aftermath, several NFL stars have finally started to hold Jackson accountable for his reprehensible Instagram posts. Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward claimed that growth “needs to take place” while Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Mitchell Schwartz, who is Jewish, said via a lengthy Twitter post that he stands tall against “any form of discrimination or hate.”

Discrimination, be it on the basis of gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation, has no place in the NFL in the year 2020. While Jackson’s initial comments were abhorrent and were followed by an apology that many took issue with, this conversation with Edelman could help Jackson better understand why his language cut so many groups so deeply. If he learns from this nightmare, something positive will have come out of this.
