NFL essentially allowing Dan Snyder’s lawyer to investigate toxic Washington culture
By Mike Luciano
The NFL is allowing Washington to police themselves.
The much-hyped Washington Post unveiling of Dan Snyder’s toxic culture in Washington was just as bad as everyone expected, as dozens of former female employees claim high-ranking members of the organization sexually harassed them repeatedly over the course of several years. The NFL is conducting an investigation, but there is a twist involved that should infuriate every NFL fanbase, Washington included.
The league is allowing Beth Wilkinson, a top Washington lawyer who has been linked to cases involving Timothy McVeigh, Hillary Clinton, and Brett Kavanaugh, to investigate the accusations of misconduct within the organization. However, Wilkinson herself was hired by the team formerly known as the Redskins in order to conduct a review of the practices within the organization. In a shocking about-face, the NFL is not handpicking their own lawyer to investigate, instead deferring to Snyder’s choice.
The NFL can’t allow Washington to essentially investigate themselves.
Just take a deep breath and look at what’s happening here. One of the NFL’s most historic franchises was found to have such a toxic culture that it makes the Jerry Richardson nightmare in Carolina pale in comparison. The NFL is not only letting a lawyer who helped someone accused of sexual assault end up on the Supreme Court investigate the culture, but the lawyer in question was hired by the very same toxic franchise to “review the organization’s protocols.”
Cheating scandals like Bountygate and Deflategate were bad enough, but anything that goes on between the white lines pales in comparison to Snyder creating a work environment in which unwarranted sexual harassment was accepted and expected. Because the NFL is constantly in a state of hitting themselves in the face after stepping on a rake like Sideshow Bob, they are treating those scandals with a higher degree of scrutiny than this one.
You’d think if anything would warrant the NFL themselves taking a good, hard look with their own eyes, it would be a scandal of this magnitude. Unfortunately, the league is deferring to Snyder.
While Wilkinson’s investigation is still incredibly problematic, that doesn’t change the fact that Snyder might not survive this bombshell, as being forced to sell the team seems like the only just punishment after such an explosive story hit the airwaves.
