Andy Reid challenges Sammy Watkins in interesting way

Sammy Watkins received a unique challenge from Andy Reid. 

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense is absolutely stacked from top to bottom, led by Patrick Mahomes, of course. Although Mahomes receives the majority of attention, especially after signing a massive contract for $500 million, Kansas City’s receiving core deserves some praise as well.

Tyreek Hill is an amazing talent who amassed 860 receiving yards last season despite injury. Add in tight end Travis Kelce, who added 1229 receiving yards, and it’s easy to see why Mahomes is able to put up the numbers we’ve grown to expect out of him.

However, there’s another very talented player on the Chiefs’ receiving core in Sammy Watkins who is overshadowed by Hill and Kelce’s presence. Watkins ended last season with just 673 receiving yards and three touchdowns, which was good for fifth on the team. The Clemson product is surely capable of more, and Andy Reid knows it.

Andy Reid has challenged Watkins to want the ball more

Although Watkins has certainly been productive with Kansas City, he has not produced like he did when he was with the Bills by the end of the 2015 season, in which he tallied a 1,000-yard season.

This caused Chiefs head coach Andy Reid to issue a challenge for Watkins where he said that he hopes Watkins will “want the ball more.”

Reid then went onto add that all great players want the ball more.

It is undeniable that Watkins is much less valued by the organization compared to Hill and Kelce, which was shown by the 27-year-old taking a pay cut during free agency in order to stay with the Chiefs.

Regardless of his monetary value and the lack of attention he receives, if Watkins is able to assert himself and increase his drive for making plays, it will only help an already incredibly talented Chiefs offense.
