Greg Zuerlein’s practice results will give Cowboys fans something to celebrate

Greg Zuerlein has been on fire at Cowboys practice

Zuerlein was an invaluable asset of Rams teams in both St. Louis and Los Angeles, as he and Johnny Hekker combined to form one of the league’s best special teams tandems. Sean McVay opted not to retain Zuerlein for 2020, however, and he landed on his feet with Mike McCarthy’s Dallas Cowboys. Ready to prove the doubters wrong, Zuerlein has been perfect at Cowboys camp, giving the team complete comfort and trust when discussing their special teams this season.

After missing nine field goals last year with the Rams, Zuerlein is out on a mission to reclaim his status as an elite kicker. He has made all 18 of his field goals in training camp, hitting from as far back as 46 yards in camp today.

Zuerlein might’ve missed nine field goals last season, but he is still one of the best kickers in the league when it comes to drilling long kicks. He has made 60 percent of his career field goals from 50 yards or farther back. After Cowboys fans suffered through the inconsistent Brett Maher in 2019, they replaced him with Kai Forbath, who made all 10 of his field goals.

Even given Forbath’s performance, McCarthy and the Cowboys think that the man affectionately known as “Legatron” has a higher ceiling given his strong leg. McCarthy brought in plenty of new faces this season, and Zuerlein might quietly have as much responsibility as anyone.

Zuerlein was a key member of a Rams team that made it all the way to the Super Bowl. If he returns to the form that earned him All-Pro recognition in 2017, the Cowboys could come very close to that game in 2020.
