Kirk Cousins on coronavirus: ‘If I die, I die’

Kirk Cousins is showing a shockingly low amount of concern over COVID-19.

With seemingly bimonthly regularity, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins trends on Twitter due to some comment that comes way out of left field. His opinions on the coronavirus ended up getting his name in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, as Cousins doesn’t seem to think that this virus is a big deal.

Despite the fact roughly 184,000 Americans have passed away from the virus, Cousins couldn’t be less concerned. On a podcast with Kyle Brandt, Cousins claimed that he doesn’t think wearing a mask will curb the spread of the virus before insisting that he has made peace with the fact he could die as a result of this infection.

Kirk Cousins stuck his foot in his mouth once again

Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, another star athlete in the prime of his athletic career, was incapacitated by the virus to the degree that he was asking a higher power not to take him. Apparently Cousins, who threw for 26 touchdowns last season and helped the Vikings win a playoff game last year, thinks that the virus is overblown, which couldn’t be farther from the truth.

It’s reasonable to wonder how these comments will go over in Mike Zimmer’s locker room. In a time when players are playing despite the fact they are risking infection, Cousins feigning indifference might cause some strife.

For all his strengths as a player and leader, Cousins offering up these comments or saying that “nobody’s perfect” when asked about playing with a gay teammate, has to make Vikings fans equal parts outraged and confused at the same time. His love for football and the competition inherent in this sport is palpable, but he needs to rethink things if he’s is OK with dying to go 9-7 this season.
